The Honolulu Century Ride
September 28, 2008
The Honolulu Century Ride (HCR) - is Hawaii's oldest and largest cycling event. This ride, not a race, was first established in 1981 and includes ages from 8-80 years old. The ride begins and ends at Kapiolani Park; and riders follow Oahu's eastern and windward shores toward their destination. Participants have the choice of riding 20, 25, 40, 50, 75 or 100 miles at their own pace. Finish area includes live entertainment, food, and booths. Join thousands of people on their bike for this premier event!
The purpose of the HCR is threefold: to encourage those who are fit to continue their fitness programs, and, to give a good reason for those who want to become fit to get started; to help lots of people become more aware of the environmental benefits of bicycling; and to join with family and friends in a healthful, joyful activity. This event serves a vital importance in HBL's ongoing activities.
The number of riders this year is projected at 4,000.

C&C bike plan
On 5/15/08 I attended a meeting to discuss the C&C bike plan for the island of Oahu.
The discussion was organized in 3 sections:
1. Goals, Policies and Mission Statements
2. Interface with other forms of public transportation
3. Proposed routes.
The discussion in the Policy Group centered around providing an infrastructure that provides oportunities for save cycling, interconnection between communities not just within communities, education and enforcement and the types of facilities to be provided.
Transportation ranged from transporting bikes on The Bus and The Boat to more facilities to permit bikes to be locked up.
The Routes group discussed biking routes and how to get them built.
There is opportunity to be involved in the planning during the roughly 6 month planning period. You can submit testimony or simply make recommendations by emailing info@oahubikeplan.org. Web site to review plan is at http://www.oahubikeplan.org.
I continue to press for a safe bike lane on Kaneohe Bay Drive from the Bay View Golf Course to Camp Kokokahi. Others pointed out that Lilipuna Dr. is extremely dangerous both for bikers and pedestrians. Proposed routes included Kahekili Hwy, Kamehameha Hwy at least as far as Hygenic Store and numerous feeder routes within neighborhoods.

Subject: O'ahu Bike Plan
Aloha,
The O'ahu Bike Plan project is underway. The City and County of Honolulu’s Department of Transportation Services is beginning its update of the 1999 Honolulu Bicycle Master Plan. The new plan will cover the entire island of O‘ahu and will guide future planning to better integrate bicycling into the island’s transportation system. The plan will take a comprehensive approach in evaluating current projects, policies and programs, and will make recommendations to improve Oahu’s bike-friendliness. The plan will also be providing recommendations to ensure that the City and County's transit systems are bike accessible.
The plan update includes a variety of opportunities for public involvement in identifying routes, establishing priorities and assisting in the evaluation of supporting plans and policies. The first of two series of public workshops will be held in the evenings of May 13 – 15.
May 13 - Leeward at Kapolei Hale from 7-9 pm
May 14 - Windward at Pali Golf Course from 7-9 pm
May 15 - Metro Honolulu at Blaisdell Center from 6:30-8:30 pm
The project timeline, newsletters, and other plan update materials can be accessed at the project website. Please complete the online questionnaire so we can learn more about your ideas for making O'ahu more bike friendly.
A project fact sheet is also attached. Please consider forwarding this email to friends and colleagues to get the word out. We look forward to your participation.
